Abdul El-Sayed Endorses “MOP Up Michigan” and “Invest in MI Kids” Ballot Initiatives
ANN ARBOR, MI – Today, U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed announced support for two statewide ballot initiatives in Michigan.
MOP (Money Out of Politics) Up Michigan would ban regulated utility monopolies like DTE and Consumers Energy from pouring cash into state-level politics. Provisions also include closing the “issue-ad loophole” which currently allows dark money groups to fund advertisements without donor disclosures.
Abdul is proud to endorse this initiative as the only candidate in the race who has never received campaign contributions from utility corporations – or any corporate PAC.
“Michiganders deserve representatives that fight for them rather than doing the bidding of corporate interests,” said Abdul. “That’s why I’ll fight to end the Citizens United regime in Washington as Michigan’s next U.S. Senator, and why I support this critical effort to demand accountability in Lansing. For too long, our energy bills have skyrocketed while Lansing politicians make backroom deals. Enough is enough.”
Invest in MI Kids seeks to allocate additional funding to our schools and educators. This initiative would institute a “Fair Share Surcharge” on taxable income above $500,000 for single filers and $1 million for joint filers. New revenue would be deposited into a fund and allocated to schools to reduce classroom sizes, invest in our teachers, and expand technical education programs, with annual audits for accountability.
“As literacy rates in Michigan plummet while teachers struggle to get by, we must find creative and fair avenues to increase funding,” said Abdul. “Millionaires can and must pay their fair share. Other states have seen success from similar initiatives, and Michigan kids deserve investment to allow them to thrive in the classroom and beyond.”
Petitioners from both ballot initiative efforts have regularly collected signatures at Abdul’s campaign events across the state, and he’s proud to officially announce his support.
