Andy Levin Endorses Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

DETROIT, MI – Former Congressman and longtime labor champion Andy Levin endorsed Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate in a joint op-ed published in The Detroit News. Levin represented Michigan’s 9th Congressional District, encompassing parts of Oakland and Macomb counties, from 2019-2023.

“The startling moment we’re living through proves we need one thing above all in our leaders in Washington – moral courage and clarity,” said Levin. “Know who you are. Know what you stand for. Know who you’re fighting for. And actually fight for them, brilliantly, creatively, relentlessly. That’s Abdul.”

In the op-ed, Andy Levin and Abdul El-Sayed argue that the Democratic party must fight for working people again:

“The party has yet to learn the critical lesson of the Trump era: It’s not enough to be against something ― it’s about what you’re for.

We fear one good off-year election night will lead to complacency. To win in 2026, Democrats have to run on a worker-first platform of corporate accountability to address our affordability crisis.”

Abdul’s campaign continues to build impressive momentum with a diverse, growing coalition of supporters. The former Congressman joins U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17), Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and over three dozen state, county, and local elected officials backing Abdul’s campaign.

“Andy Levin has spent his career fighting for the dignity and power of workers, and I am honored to have his endorsement,” said Abdul. “Andy and I know that Democrats can only win by fighting for Michiganders most basic rights: the right to join a union, to get healthcare without breaking the bank, to breathe clean air and drink clean water, and to build a dignified life. That’s what this campaign is about and that’s why I’m so proud to have Andy by my side.”
