Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Releases New Video Highlighting the Burden and Absurdity of American Medical Debt

ANN ARBOR, MI – Today, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed released a new video highlighting the absurdity of medical debt in America by simply crossing the river into Windsor, Canada. Americans hold staggering $225 billion in medical debt while many Canadians are unfamiliar entirely with the concept. That debt can be eliminated by the government for pennies on the dollar, a plan that worked when Abdul led health departments here in Michigan and that Abdul plans to implement in the US Senate.

The video highlights that medical debt is not an unavoidable reality, it is a political failure. At healthcare town halls, Abdul has been sitting with Michiganders who share his belief that no one in the richest country in the world should lose their home, their savings, or their future because they got sick – especially when a different system exists just across the river.

As Health Director for Michigan’s largest and most diverse county, Abdul spearheaded a program that is cancelling up to $700 million in medical debt for 300,000 Michiganders over two years. Before this program, Wayne County ranked among the worst in the nation for medical debt burden.
