El-Sayed Campaign Breaks the Mold With Early College Football TV Buy

MICHIGAN – Tonight, Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign will become the first in Michigan’s U.S. Senate primary to go up on TV, launching an ad buy during highly-viewed college football bowl games – a savvy move that demonstrates the dynamism of a general-election-ready campaign.

The early bowl-game buy reflects an aggressive strategy – investing in key moments to reach voters that many candidates overlook, including young men and politically disengaged Michiganders. It’s authentically Abdul, a candidate who captained his high school football, wrestling, and lacrosse teams, and maintained his deep love for University of Michigan football far after graduation. Abdul is Michigan made and Michigan to the core.

The ad, produced by FIGHT Agency, features Senator Bernie Sanders talking about the critical need for a doctor and healthcare advocate in the U.S. Senate. The ad will run tonight, Friday, December 19 during the NCAA Myrtle Beach Bowl featuring Western Michigan University. There will be additional placements for the GameAbove Sports Bowl on December 26 featuring Central Michigan University, and for the Citrus Bowl on December 31, featuring the University of Michigan, Abdul’s alma mater.

College football remains one of the last places where Michiganders can come together across political divides, age, and background. To win in November, Abdul’s campaign is building a broad movement that brings everyday people in by meeting them where they actually are.

“I grew up playing team sports, and I know how you win,” said Abdul. “Winning as a team means bringing people together around their goals, doing the hard work when nobody’s watching, and understanding that it takes all of us doing what we can for what we want. That’s exactly how we’re running this campaign.”
