Labor Policy Agenda
The constitutional right to organize, bargain collectively, and be treated with dignity on the job sits at the foundation of a fair economy. Yet for decades, pro-corporate, anti-worker policies have systematically undermined these rights—tilting the balance of power away from workers and toward corporations and billionaires. Abdul is a second-generation union member, raised with a deep respect for collective bargaining and solidarity. As Michigan’s U.S. Senator, Abdul will prioritize rebuilding our economic and political systems to empower working people, protecting them from intimidation and exploitation
Every worker should have the right to join a union and support a family with one good job. It’s critical that the Senate pass the PRO Act and oppose any and all “Right to Work” legislation. We must protect and expand prevailing wage protections and champion worker-centered trade policies, including strategic tariffs to grow good union jobs.
Abdul is committed to building a government that works for people – not billionaires – and to unlock what we can achieve together. Abdul will introduce or support the following legislation:
- Demanding strong antitrust enforcement and empowering the Federal Trade Commission to stop harmful consolidation to protect wages, working conditions, and union contracts.
- Pass worker-forward antitrust reform to structurally support workers over corporate interests.
- Strengthen and broaden the FTC’s merger review authorities to give clear powers to block consolidation that hurts workers.
- Banning corporate stock buybacks by repealing SEC Rule 10b-18, ensuring corporations invest in workers rather than executive bonuses.
- Eliminate the loopholes that shield stock buybacks from market-manipulation enforcement.
- Mandating employee-elected board representation for publicly-traded companies
- Shift power inside companies by mandating worker’s voices be heard through a seat at the board table.
- Protecting retirement security, especially multi-employer pensions, by defending the Butch Lewis Act and supporting the Protecting Employees and Retirees in Business Bankruptcies Act.
- Congress must resist efforts to repeal, weaken, or defund the Butch Lewis Act implemented under the American Rescue Plan and instead codify it as a permanent pillar of federal retirement policy.
- Guaranteeing healthcare for every American through Medicare for All, freeing unions and their members to choose between bargaining for higher wages or add-on health insurance.
- Empowering unions and their members to choose between the guaranteed public health insurance or private options while ensuring public coverage for every union member.
