Wayne County Executive Warren Evans and Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley Endorse Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate
Top local leaders back Abdul’s people-powered campaign for U.S. Senate
DETROIT, MI – U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is proud to announce the endorsement of Wayne County Chief Executive Warren Evans and Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley.
Executive Warren Evans has led Michigan’s largest and most diverse county since 2015, guiding a major fiscal turnaround and championing investments in public health, restorative justice programming, and expanded transit options. Abdul worked closely with Executive Evans in his role as Director of Health, Human, and Veterans Services for the County to deliver innovative programs to improve lives – including canceling medical debt for up to 300,000 residents, launching a county-wide air quality monitoring network, and providing free eyeglasses to children who needed them.
“I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Abdul’s leadership up close and I can say with full confidence that Michigan would be well-served by his voice in the United States Senate. Abdul has never waited for permission to lead,” said County Executive Warren Evans. “He brings people together, tackles tough challenges head-on, and delivers results that matter for everyday people. Whether it’s building coalitions to expand access to healthcare or standing up for working families, Abdul has always shown the courage and clarity needed to get things done. This is the moment for leaders like Abdul — leaders grounded in values, committed to public service, and unafraid to fight for a more just and equitable future. Washington could use more of that. Michigan deserves it. Wayne County deserves it.”
In Flint, Mayor Sheldon Neeley has been a leading advocate for clean water and public health, stepping up to protect residents at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and overseeing successful lead pipe replacements.
“The families of Flint deserve a United States Senator who understands our hearts, our fight, and our values. Abdul El-Sayed demonstrates strength and character, and will amplify our voices,” said Mayor Neeley. “His bold vision is exactly what this moment demands. I’m proud to endorse Abdul because I know he’ll fight for healthcare, affordable housing, and an economy that works for all of us — the policies we need to help our communities thrive. As a public health champion, Abdul has been a strong ally to Flint, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with us in our fight for clean water. He exemplifies compassionate, principled leadership.”
“I’m honored to earn the support of Executive Warren Evans and Mayor Sheldon Neeley, two true public servants who know what it means to show up, listen, and deliver,” said Abdul. “They understand what it means to show up on the ground and build government that actually delivers for people. They walk the walk, not just talk the talk. And together, we’re building a movement grounded in service, driven by a simple idea: that every Michigander deserves dignity, opportunity, and a government that has their back. As our next U.S. Senator, I look forward to working directly with Executive Evans and Mayor Neeley and the communities we serve to make sure that Washington works for all of us–not the oligarchs and the billionaires.”
