State Representative Donavan McKinney and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Cross Endorse in Respective Primaries

MICHIGAN –  Today, U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed announced an endorsement from State Representative Donavan McKinney (HD 11- Detroit & Warren). Dr. El-Sayed also announced his endorsement of Rep. McKinney in his race to represent Michigan’s 13th Congressional District in Congress.

“I am thrilled to endorse Dr. Abdul El-Sayed to represent Michigan in the US Senate! Our shared goals of getting money out of politics, enacting Medicare For All, and advocating for working families unites us deeply — and the stakes of this fight have never been higher,” said Rep. Donavan McKinney. “As the Supreme Court ruled to gut the Voting Rights Act earlier this week, the need for real representation in Washington is immense, and I look forward to partnering with Abdul to enact critical legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and ensure every Michigander has full access to the democracy we all deserve.”

This comes on the heels of Abdul receiving the endorsement of State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky earlier this week, bringing him to 11 total endorsements from Michigan state representatives. With support continuing to build across Michigan, Abdul is consolidating a broad coalition of leaders who are rallying around his message of putting everyday working people first.

This momentum is also reflected in recent public polling showing Abdul rising 8 points from January to April, rapidly gaining on his competitors and now within striking distance to the top of the field. Taken together, the surge in endorsements and the rising poll numbers point to a campaign that is not only expanding, positioning Abdul as a leading contender as the highly competitive race enters its next phase.

“Donavan McKinney is the people’s candidate,” said Abdul. “I’ve watched him work everywhere, from neighborhoods in Detroit to the halls of power in Lansing. Nobody brings more of themselves to public service on behalf of the community he grew up in and is raising his children in. I couldn’t be more proud to support him.”

Other State Representatives endorsing Abdul include: State Representative Laurie Pohutsky (HD 17 – Livonia), State Representative Carrie Rheingans House District 47 (D-Ann Arbor), State Representative Erin Byrnes House District 15 (D-Dearborn), State Representative Emily Dievendorf House District 77 (D-Lansing), State Representative Alabas Farhat House District 3 (D-Dearborn), State Representative Dylan Wegela House District 26 (D-Garden City), State Representative Jimmie Wilson Jr. House District 32 (D-Ypsilanti), State Representative Tonya Myers Phillips House District 7 (D-Detroit), State Representative Kara Hope House District 74 (D-Lansing & Delhi Township) & State Representative Cynthia Neeley House District 70 (D-Flint).

Bernie Sanders, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and over 140 other elected officials, community leaders, and advocacy groups. See the full list of Abdul’s endorsers HERE.
