ICYMI: Mike Rogers Calls Trump’s Trade War “Necessary” As Costs Climb for Michiganders

New Reporting Highlights Mike Rogers’ Complicity in Trump’s Needless Tariff War With Canada, Which is Jacking Up Costs for Michiganders 

MICHIGAN –  A new report from POLITICO exposes Mike Rogers’ unconditional support for Trump’s trade war with Canada. This a pattern for Rogers, who has proven time and again that he is nothing but a rubber stamp for the administration’s disastrous economic agenda.

POLITICO reports that Rogers is a staunch supporter of Trump’s escalating trade war with Canada, which is having a disproportionate impact on Michigan industries. 

  • As costs spike for Michiganders, Rogers is arguing that “the tariffs Trump imposed on Canadian goods last month are ‘necessary.’”
  • The statement of support comes as Michigan industries bear the brunt of the trade war’s catastrophic consequences. 
  • “Roughly $1.3 billion in Michigan exports face Canada’s new counter-tariffs, according to a POLITICO analysis, one of the highest amounts of any state. And many of the state’s largest employers, including automakers, the dairy industry, appliance manufacturers and other industrial suppliers, all stand to take a particular hit from the duties, which stretch from 15 to 50 percent.”

Leading voices in Michigan’s auto industry are condemning Trump’s trade war and urgently calling for an end to escalations. 

  • The United Auto Workers released a statement that the union unequivocally “rejects any escalation on Canada, a country with strong unions and labor standards.” 
  • “An auto industry executive said Trump’s threat to hit Canadian auto and parts imports with a 50 percent tariff on Jan. 1 would be ‘cataclysmic’ for the sector.”
  • Despite these appeals, while costs spike for everyday Michiganders, Rogers is resolute in his position as Trump’s right hand man. 

“Donald Trump is launching this trade war for his own vanity, and he’s asking Michigan families to pay the price,” said Abdul. “Trump has been failing Michigan through these chaotic tariffs and bad trade deals for far too long. Mike Rogers won’t do anything but rubber stamp them.”
