ICYMI: UAW President Shawn Fain Praises Abdul as a Fighter in Wide-Ranging Discussion
President Fain and Abdul Talk Faith, Family, and the Future of the Working Class
MICHIGAN – Dr. Abdul El-Sayed sat down with UAW President Shawn Fain to discuss their shared commitment to fighting for working Michiganders, taking on corporate greed, and building an economy that works for everyone.
The wide-ranging conversation touched on Abdul’s upbringing and the role of faith and family in shaping his values, Medicare for All, protecting American manufacturing jobs, retirement security, and ensuring new technologies benefit workers, not corporate executives.

Highlights from the conversation include:
President Fain praised Abdul for standing with workers:
“I thank God that you decided to stand up, and I know damn good and well you’ll be standing with working-class people in the state of Michigan. I’m damn proud to know you and look forward to getting this thing to the finish line.”
Abdul reflected on the lessons of fatherhood:
“If there is one thing that drives me as a political framework, it’s what would we build if we believed all of our kids were all of our kids?”
Abdul blasted corporate interests blocking Medicare for All:
“We’re the richest, most powerful country in the world. We are the United States of America. This is the greatest country in the world. And we let some CEOs lie to us and tell us that we couldn’t possibly do it better. Yes, we could. It’s just a matter of priorities.”
Abdul outlined his commitment to fighting for working Michiganders in the Senate:
“Michigan’s next United States senator needs to be fighting for unions, needs to be fighting for working people, needs to be fighting for guaranteed healthcare, needs to be fighting for childcare and senior care, needs to be fighting to hold corporations accountable.”
