Common Defense Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN – Today, Common Defense, national grassroots organization of over 500,000 veterans and military families, endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate.

“Common Defense is proud to endorse Abdul for Senate because he’s the kind of leader veterans can trust: someone who’s proven he can make government deliver for working class people,” Jose Vasquez, Executive Director, Common Defense; U.S. Army veteran. “Abdul is fighting for guaranteed health care, an economy that respects hard work, and a strong VA that keeps faith with those who served. Michigan needs a Senator who will take on corporate power and protect our freedoms with the same seriousness that veterans swore the oath with. We’re with Abdul all the way.”

As Health, Human, and Veterans Services Director for Wayne County, Abdul oversaw programs for veterans facing a variety of hardships such as eviction and foreclosure, burial costs, and overall financial assistance for veterans and their families. He also managed support programs dedicated to navigating benefit applications through the Department of Veterans Affairs for Wayne County veterans.

“It is an honor to earn the support of Common Defense, a group who has relentlessly organized to fight for our democracy and basic human dignity for all people,” said Abdul El-Sayed. “Those who served our country and continue to be on the front lines deserve real care, stability and respect. This administration’s failure to deliver for them is a moral stain. I look forward to working alongside Common Defense as a U.S. Senator to deliver guaranteed healthcare, sustainable and affordable housing, humane foreign policy, and an end to corruption and greed in our politics.”

Common Defense joins a broad coalition backing Abdul’s campaign, including Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, and more than 80 other state and local elected officials, community leaders, and advocacy groups.
