National Nurses United Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s Open U.S. Senate Seat

MICHIGAN –  Today, U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed secured endorsement from National Nurses United (NNU), showcasing his longstanding commitment to frontline healthcare workers and labor rights. NNU’s support signals the campaign’s growing momentum.

“Nurses are thrilled to endorse Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan Senate,” said NNU President Jamie Brown, RN. “As a fellow Michigander, I have witnessed Abdul rebuild entire agencies, and he knows what it takes to make government work for the people. He is a long-time, staunch advocate for single-payer, and nurses will be with him on day one to fix our broken health care system.”

Over the last decade, Abdul has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with nurses on picket lines across Michigan as they’ve fought for safe staffing ratios and collective bargaining rights. During this campaign, he has joined striking nurses with OPEIU Local 40 in Macomb County and Teamsters Local 332 in Grand Blanc.

This endorsement reflects Abdul’s career-long dedication to elevating the voices of nurses who form the central backbone of the healthcare system. From his time as a public health leader to his current Senate campaign, Abdul has consistently championed policies that protect both patients and the professionals who care for them. Abdul recently released a “Labor Policy Agenda” outlining a framework for legislation he plans to support and introduce to empower working people and protect them from intimidation and exploitation.

“I’m incredibly honored to have earned the endorsement of National Nurses United,”  said Abdul. “As the son and grandson of nurses, and a public health doctor, I know that nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system. But hospital conglomerates are pushing impossible workloads on them, making their working conditions less safe while burying them in piles of paperwork. I will always stand with union nurses who show up everyday to take care of their patients and fight for a better, fairer healthcare system. Together, we’ll pass Medicare for All and build a healthcare system that focuses on patients, rather than corporate profits. When we empower nurses, all of us win.”

NNU marks the first national union to back Abdul El-Sayed in this race. NNU joins a growing coalition supporting Abdul which includes IATSE Local 26, Common Defense, Our Revolution, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, and over 140 other elected officials, community leaders, and advocacy groups. See the full list of Abdul’s endorsers HERE.
