AFA-CWA Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s Open U.S. Senate Seat

MICHIGAN – Today, the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA-CWA) announced their endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race. The AFA-CWA represents 55,000 flight attendants across 20 different airlines in Michigan and nationwide.

“Working people need elected leaders who understand that unions are integral to democracy and are the means to better the lives of everyday people,” said Sara Nelson, president of the AFA-CWA. “Abdul El-Sayed grew up in a union family. He walked picket lines alongside his father, and became a card-carrying union member. He’s walked arm in arm with nurses, teachers, autoworkers and many more in the fight for dignity at work. He’s fighting now to be in position to champion the policies we need to survive and thrive. AFA-CWA endorses Abdul El-Sayed for US Senate because our fight is his fight.”

The AFA-CWA joins National Nurses United and the UAW as the next national trade union to endorse Abdul for Michigan’s senate seat. Abdul has been a member of AFT Local 477 and 6244, SEIU Local 500, the National Writers Union, and the AAUP. He is the only Democratic primary candidate in the race that has been a card-carrying union member. In January, Abdul released a Labor Policy Agenda, outlining his platform to protect union workers as Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.

“Flight attendants are highly trained professionals who do one of the toughest jobs in our economy, and deserve the dignity, pay and protections that should come with that work,” said Abdul. “The AFA-CWA has fought for decades to make aviation safer for workers and passengers alike, and all of us are better off because of it. I’m honored to earn their endorsement and proud to stand alongside them in the broader fight to restore power to working people, protect the right to organize, and transform our economy to benefit all of us, not just corporate executives.”
