Senator Chris Van Hollen Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN –  Today, Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) announced his endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s open Senate seat. Sen. Van Hollen brings years of proven leadership experience and a strong track record of delivering results in the House and Senate. He has been a fierce fighter in the Senate opposing Trump’s weaponization of ICE, standing up against the illegal war in Iran, battling special-interest money in politics, and building an economy that works for all, not the billionaire class.

“This November, we need to elect Democratic senators and a Democratic majority who will help us take on a lawless and corrupt Trump Administration,” said Senator Van Hollen. “We need fighters in the Senate who want to dismantle a broken status quo that isn’t working for the American people and to take on the big money special interests working to rig our economy and our politics in favor of the billionaires — at the expense of everyone else. That’s why I’m endorsing Abdul El-Sayed for Senate in the great state of Michigan. Abdul recognizes that our health care system is broken, that costs are too high, and that our economy isn’t working for working Americans. He will fight for an America where unions are strong, and paychecks are big enough and costs are low enough that everyone in Michigan can afford to live with dignity. Abdul’s fearless voice is needed in the United States Senate.”

“Senator Chris Van Hollen has shown time and time again what effective leadership in the Senate looks like,” said Abdul. “He is a determined fighter for Maryland’s working people, a statesman of the first order, and has shown what it means to lead with your values, rather than be beholden to corporate interests and foreign lobbies. His work to bring attention to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as his work to guarantee the safety of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, are a testament to the power a Senator with moral clarity can have. I’m looking forward to working with Senator Van Hollen in the US Senate, and I am deeply grateful for his support.”

Sen. Van Hollen follows Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) as the second U.S. Senator to endorse Abdul. Abdul has received endorsements from several federal elected officials, including Ro Khanna (CA-17), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Summer Lee (PA-12), Delia Ramirez (IL-3), Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, the Hon. David Bonior and the Hon. Andy Levin. Beyond members of Congress, Abdul has earned support from over 150 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, the AFA-CWA, the Working Families Party, National Nurses United, and more.
