New Poll Finds Dr. Abdul El-Sayed Strongest General Election Candidate in Michigan Senate Race

El-Sayed brings unique coalition building strength, energizes key segments of base

Stevens fares the worst in a general election; poll finds her nomination would suppress key segments of the Democrat base

MICHIGAN – Last night, Zenith Research released a new Michigan Senate general election poll that found Dr. Abdul El-Sayed performs the best against Republican Mike Rogers. In head-to-head general election match-ups, Abdul leads Mike Rogers by 3, McMorrow leads by 2, and Haley leads by 1.

“While an uncomfortable truth for the establishment, Abdul is demonstrating the strongest ability to build and maintain a winning Democratic coalition in November,” said campaign spokesperson Roxie Richner. “Democrats cannot afford to nominate Haley Stevens, who has proven to be unpopular, uninspiring, and unable to generate the necessary momentum to keep Michigan blue.”

Key Findings:

  • Haley Stevens is extremely unpopular with very progressive / liberal voters, with 31% of that group holding a strongly unfavorable view. A portion of these voters say they would abstain from voting or vote third party if Haley Stevens were the nominee, a risk that Democrats cannot afford.
  • Abdul El-Sayed performs strongest with Independents and voters ages 18-29
  • Abdul’s policy positions are extremely popular with general election voters in Michigan: 51% (+18) of voters say they favor a candidate who supports Medicare for All, 46% (+5) say they favor a candidate who supports abolishing ICE, and 60% (+31) oppose increasing military aid to Israel.
