Former NYC Comptroller and Congressional Candidate Brad Lander Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate
MICHIGAN – Today, former New York City Comptroller and Democratic nominee for New York’s 11th congressional district Brad Lander announced his endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat.
Lander was elected to the New York City Council in 2010 where he became an integral part of passing landmark labor protection laws, including guaranteeing gig workers a living wage and enacting wage theft protection for freelancers. In 2021, he was elected Comptroller of New York City – a position he used to keep the city fiscally healthy while scouring out waste and holding Eric Adams’ administration accountable. This June, he won the Democratic nomination for New York’s 11th congressional district, including Lower Manhattan and western parts of Brooklyn.
“I first met Abdul through our dear friend Ady Barkan, who died of ALS while courageously crusading for Medicare for All, and there is no one who will work harder than Abdul to win that fight,” said Lander. “We need Abdul in the Senate to end the reign of billionaires and special interests, so Congress can deliver for working people. Abdul and I will also be partners in resetting U.S. foreign policy to achieve a just peace for Palestinians and Israelis, beginning by ending U.S. military aid to Israel while it violates international law and Palestinian human rights. We share the belief that the rights and safety of Jewish and Muslim people are inextricably intertwined, from the Midwest to Midtown to the Middle East.”
“Brad Lander understands the power of standing for your values, unapologetically. He built his campaign on rejecting money from corporations and AIPAC, investing in people here at home instead of bombs abroad, and guaranteeing healthcare for all,” said Abdul. “His landslide win shows us how hungry people are to change the status quo, and build a government that works for them, not billionaires and oligarchs. I’m honored to receive his support, and I look forward to working with him in Congress.”
Lander joins a long list of national endorsers backing Abdul. Abdul has received endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), the Hon. Andy Levin, and several other current and former Members of Congress. He has earned support from over 200 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, Indivisible, the Working Families Party, National Nurses United, and more.
