Former Mallory McMorrow Endorsers Put Support Behind Dr. Abdul El-Sayed

MICHIGAN –  Today, a slate of former endorsers for Senator Mallory McMorrow are announcing their support for Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate bid. Following McMorrow’s exit from the Democratic primary, the race became clear-cut: an establishment-backed candidate running on corporate money versus a grassroots campaign funded by Michiganders looking to change the status quo. Despite policy differences, Mallory and Abdul share the same commitment to rejecting corporate influence in politics – leading many of her former supporters to Abdul’s campaign and forming a united front for the interests of Michigan and working people, not DC consultants or special interests.

The following officials have endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate:

  • State Senator Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor)
  • State Senator Mary Cavanaugh (D-Redford Township)
  • Former State Representative and Mayor of Royal Oak Jim Ellison
  • Washtenaw County Commissioner Annie Somerville (Ypsilanti)

“We might not have seen eye-to-eye on every issue, but Senator McMorrow and I both agree that our politics have been captured by oligarchs and billionaires who are exerting their influence against the will of working Michiganders,” said Abdul. “As this race advances and two choices remain, we welcome Mallory’s supporters to our movement. To everyone who is tired of corporations deciding what is best for us, this campaign has a place for you. We cannot let dark money buy another election, and the support we’ve received from these principled folks is exactly how we fight back. I’m deeply grateful for their support.”

“Abdul speaks clearly on the issues that matter to Americans everyday, especially the high cost of health care,” said State Sen. Irwin. “Abdul knows that a federal health insurance plan that covers basic care for everyone will save Americans money and save American lives.”

“Abdul El-Sayed is a proven leader and a tireless advocate for the people of Michigan,” said State Sen. Cavanaugh. “Having seen his work firsthand as Director of the Wayne County Department of Health, I know Abdul has what it takes to take on corporate interest, expand access to quality, affordable health care, and fight for Michiganders. Abdul is the leader Michigan needs to meet this moment in the U.S. Senate. I’m proud to endorse him.”

“I am proud to support Abdul for U.S. Senate because of his commitment to Medicare for All,” said Commissioner Somerville. “People should not have to choose between paying for rent, groceries, or healthcare. I believe he is the best candidate in this fight.”

These endorsers join an expanding group of over 200 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, National Nurses United, Indivisible, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), and more. View a full list of Abdul’s endorsers here.
