NEW AD: A Life Changed by Abdul, Meet Mr. Larry 

MICHIGAN – Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign today released a new ad titled “Mr. Larry”. The 30-second spot tells the story of former Detroit city bus driver Larry Turner, who was forced into early retirement after a car crash 12 years ago left him with severe injuries. Despite having health insurance, Mr. Larry was left burdened with thousands of dollars in medical debt.

Years later, Turner received a letter informing him that all of his medical debt had been erased through the Undue Medical Debt Relief Program Abdul launched in 2024 as Director of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human, and Veteran Services.

The Undue Medical Debt Relief Program was a signature accomplishment of Abdul’s in Wayne County government. To date, it has eliminated nearly $60 million in medical debt for more than 80,000 residents and is on track to erase $700 million in medical debt for more than 300,000 Wayne County residents.

As Michiganders look for leaders who can deliver real results, Mr. Larry’s story offers a tangible example of Abdul’s record of turning progressive ideas into change for working families.

 My name is Mr. Larry 

On my way to work one day, I was in a car accident.

I had insurance, but the bills kept coming. 

I was in thousands of dollars of debt.

I get a letter in the mail and the next thing I know, my debt was clean. 

Abdul fought for a program to cancel medical debt and he won. 

That helped a lot of people, and it helped me for sure. 

He’s a good man, he’s kindhearted, I can’t wait to see what he does in Washington.
