U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN –  Today, Representative Ilhan Omar (MN-05) announced her endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat. Rep. Omar, who represents the city of Minneapolis and surrounding areas, is one of the first Muslim women to serve in Congress, as well as the first woman of color to represent the state of Minnesota. A staunch progressive and champion of working people, Rep. Omar has used her office to deliver consistently for her constituents, including playing a major role in passing the Inflation Reduction Act, pushing for student debt relief, and securing millions in federal investment for her district. A prominent critic of unconditional foreign aid, she has rejected AIPAC and its influence in politics, and has strongly advocated for Palestinian rights during her time in Congress.

“Abdul El-Sayed exemplifies the kind of leadership we need in Congress right now,” said Rep. Omar. “His refusal to be bossed around by corporate interests, dedication to tackling affordability, and staunch support for Medicare for All is how we start to deliver for working people. Abdul leads with his values and tapped directly into the needs of Michiganders like no other candidate. He is ready to win this seat and take back the Senate. He is the best choice to beat Republicans this November, and I look forward to working with him in Congress.”

“Rep. Ilhan Omar is one of the most courageous and unwavering fighters in Congress right now,” said Abdul. “We need fearlessness and grit to fight back against Trump and his oligarchy. When ICE terrorized her district, she didn’t bend a knee to authoritarianism – she stood with her community and fought back. When extremists attack her constituents because of where they come from, she isn’t afraid to take a stand against hate. I am grateful for her support.”

Rep. Omar joins a longlist of federal office holders backing Abdul. Abdul has received endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Summer Lee (PA-12), Delia Ramirez (IL-3), Analilia Meija (NJ-11), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, the Hon. David Bonior and the Hon. Andy Levin. Beyond members of Congress, Abdul has earned support from over 200 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, Indivisible, the Working Families Party, National Nurses United, and more.
