Michigan AFL-CIO Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN – Today, Michigan AFL-CIO endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in his campaign for United States Senate. Representing over 1,000,000 members in more than 40 unions across the state of Michigan, the AFL-CIO will activate their broad coalition to turn out for Abdul in his fight to get money out of politics, money in your pockets, and pass Medicare for All.

“Abdul is as Michigan as cherry pie,” said Ron Bieber, president of the Michigan AFL-CIO. “He was born and raised in Southeast Michigan. He went to public school and captained his high school football and wrestling teams. After attending UofM, Abdul served as Detroit’s health director – prioritizing our kid’s health. And, he’s a card-carrying union member. We need a lifelong Michigander who understands how forever wars abroad drive up the prices we pay for gas and groceries here at home. Tell you one thing for DAMN sure – that ain’t Mike Rogers.”

Abdul has been a card-carrying member of AFT Local 477 and 6244, SEIU Local 500, the National Writers Union, and the AAUP, and has made labor a central part of his bid for Senate, particularly through his Labor Policy Agenda, where he outlines his plan to empower unions and working families.

“I’m incredibly honored to have Michigan AFL-CIO by my side in the fight to make life better and more affordable for workers in every corner of the state,” said Abdul El-Sayed, candidate for US Senate. “Unions built Michigan, and I’m in this race to empower union workers and families across the state who are being squeezed by the corruption and chaos coming out of Washington. I will never waver in the fight to take on the status quo and the billionaires who are ripping off Michigan families, and I couldn’t be prouder to have Michigan AFL-CIO in my corner.”

Michigan AFL-CIO joins a broad pro-worker coalition fighting to elect Abdul to the United States Senate, including the UAW, National Nurses United, AFT, MEA, AFGE  IATSE Local 26, GEO Local 3550, UA Local 174 Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Vice President Kamala Harris, Rep. Haley Stevens, State Senator Mallory McMorrow and over 300 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions.
