Planned Parenthood Action Fund Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN – Today, Planned Parenthood Action Fund announced its endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate. Planned Parenthood serves a critical role in communities across Michigan and the country, fighting to make reproductive and sexual healthcare services accessible to everyone. The Action Fund is an outspoken advocate for reproductive rights and draws attention to attacks on healthcare across the country.

“Electing Dr. Abdul El-Sayed – who would be the first Democratic doctor in the Senate since 1969 – would be a historic win for reproductive rights advocates across the country,” said Planned Parenthood Action Fund President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson. “Throughout his career, Abdul has fought to expand access to reproductive health services. He understands how critical it is that Michiganders can afford to get the care they need. Planned Parenthood Action Fund proudly endorses Abdul, and trusts that he will fight for everyone’s ability to make decisions for their own bodies, lives, and futures. He will bring a much-needed change in perspective to how we approach reproductive health to the Senate.”

“As the Trump administration works recklessly to tear away peoples’ bodily autonomy and keep people misinformed about their own health, Planned Parenthood has been relentless in their mission to provide people the healthcare services they need,” said Abdul. “As a former public health official, I have always admired the tenacity and compassion of the folks at Planned Parenthood. I look forward to partnering with them in the Senate to defend the reproductive rights of every Michigander, period.”

Alexis McGill Johnson plans to join the Abdul for Senate campaign this Wednesday for community conversation on protecting reproductive rights in Michigan alongside Birth Detroit and the Women for Abdul coalition.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund joins a long list of other non-profits, advocacy organizations and labor unions backing Abdul’s candidacy. He has received endorsements from National Nurses United, UAW, End Citizens United, MoveOn, and Indivisible. Over 300 other groups and Democratic leaders have also backed his candidacy, including former Vice President Kamala D. Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Haley Stevens, State Senator Mallory McMorrow.
