Independent Focus Groups Show Abdul Overperforming With Trump Voters
While Rogers Sinks in the Polls, Abdul Gains Momentum From Unlikely Supporters
Michigan Trump Voter: “Mike Rogers might be a Donald Trump yes-man… what are they really standing for? Like, what are their goals and accomplishments that they wanna get done?”
MICHIGAN – Yesterday, The Bulwark published a report titled “Why Abdul El-Sayed Is Overperforming With Trump Voters,” highlighting the broad coalition backing Abdul’s campaign for Senate. In focus groups with Michiganders who voted for Trump in 2024, The Bulwark found swathes of voters feel betrayed by the administration’s disastrous economic policies, from the foolish trade war to the illegal Iran War. Straining under record-breaking costs, Trump voters are increasingly looking to Abdul for a change from the unbearable status quo.
As a political outsider, Abdul is uniquely well-positioned to win Trump voters frustrated with the establishment:
- “When you ask me about why the establishment…[is] so worried about me,” El-Sayed said, “it’s because there are a lot of people who listen to [MTG and Trump] who are going to vote for me in the general election.”
- Abdul is a unique force among Democrats in winning over Trump voters. A recent New York Times / Siena poll found Abdul winning 8 percent of 2024 Trump voters, compared to 5 percent for New Hampshire’s Chris Pappas or 3 percent for Maine’s Troy Jackson.
- As someone who has never taken a dime of corporate money, Abdul represents what many see as necessary change. One voter argued that “all of Washington is full of criminals right now…doing insider trading and Lord knows what” and expressed a desire for new leadership.
- Abdul’s status as “an unconventional outsider…[and] certainly not part of the establishment” is helping him make strides among Michigan Trump voters.
As the Rogers-Trump agenda continues to skyrocket costs on gas, groceries, healthcare, and everything in between, Michigan Trump voters are hungry for change.
- The Rogers-backed Iran War and tariff war have sent costs through the roof for working Michiganders. While Michiganders struggle to make ends meet, they are souring on the administration that brought about these conditions.
- One voter emphasized her discontent with a Rogers-Trump agenda: “Mike Rogers might be a Donald Trump yes-man… what are they really standing for? Like, what are their goals and accomplishments that they wanna get done?”
- As another voter put it: “I know [Mike Rogers] was pretty much Trump’s guy… so I don’t even know how I feel about that.”
- Another voter concurred: “My other thing with El-Sayed [is] he’s running against Mike Rogers, who is 100 percent backed by Trump and everything, and has voted with Trump on everything, and those are the very policies that’s hurt us as American people.”
