Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi Endorses Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

Hashmi joins growing coalition of elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions supporting Abdul

MICHIGAN – Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi today announced her endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate.

“Dr. El-Sayed and I come from a shared tradition of education and public service, and we both understand the responsibilities that come with a focus on building resilient and healthy communities,” said Virginia Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi. “My decision to endorse reflects my alignment with Dr. El-Sayed’s stated priorities, including an economy that works for everyone, Medicare for All, affordable housing, clean air, water, and soil protections, and support for labor and the rights of working people.”

Hashmi continued: “We are living through a period of profound political instability, and the chaos coming from the Trump administration has real consequences for families and communities. At this moment, we need leaders who are prepared to fight for an economy that works for everyone, defend labor protections, and champion a government that delivers on the issues that matter most. For all these reasons, I am proud to stand with Dr. El-Sayed.”

Hashmi has spent her career breaking barriers and opening doors for others,” said Abdul El-Sayed. “Her leadership has always been about delivering for the people she serves—from lowering costs and expanding access to healthcare to defending reproductive freedom and voting rights. I’m proud to have her support as we fight together to put working people back at the center of our politics.”

Hashmi, a longtime educator who served in the Virginia Senate before being elected lieutenant governor in 2025, made history as the first Muslim woman elected to statewide office in the United States and the first Asian American elected statewide in Virginia.

Hashmi’s endorsement adds to the growing coalition of national, state, and local elected officials supporting Abdul’s campaign, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Haley Stevens, and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow. Abdul has also earned support from a broad range of political organizations, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, UAW, Indivisible, the Working Families Party, National Nurses United, and more.
