Former Detroit Police Chief, Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans backs Abdul on Public Safety
MICHIGAN – Today, the Abdul for Senate campaign released a new statewide ad featuring Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, former Wayne County Sheriff and chief of the Detroit Police. Executive Evans highlights Abdul’s strong record on public safety and calls out the bad faith smear campaigns that have been levied against Abdul.
County Executive Evans, who spent decades in law enforcement, hired Abdul to serve as Director of Wayne County’s Department of Health, Human, and Veteran Services, the largest municipal health department in Michigan. In the ad, Executive Evans highlights Abdul’s steadfast support of Wayne County’s law enforcement and sheriff’s deputies. As director, Abdul oversaw reforms at the medical examiner’s office and supported law enforcement as they successfully brought down crime across Wayne County.
Executive Evans: “Abdul worked to keep Wayne County safe. Supported our police and our sheriffs. I trust Abdul to keep Michigan families safe. I know public safety and I know Abdul.”
Abdul supports investing in local law enforcement and prosecuting violent criminals, and spent his career in public health helping law enforcement make communities safer.
- Abdul “worked with Wayne County law enforcement to bring crime down when he was the county health director,” and crime rates fell in both Detroit and Wayne County while he served in leadership.
- While Abdul worked for the City of Detroit and Wayne County, law enforcement funding repeatedly increased year over year.
- Abdul instituted reforms at the medical examiner’s office, improving efficiency and getting investigators to crime scenes faster, and increasing revenue by $200K by addressing a backlog of paperwork.
- Abdul spearheaded an initiative to combat the opioid crisis by making life-saving naloxone more widely available, and under his leadership, overdose deaths in Wayne County decreased 42% in 2024.
- WDET: “Accessibility to life-saving Naloxone (aka Narcan) and peer recovery coaches have been cited as a few reasons behind the decreases.”

Executive Warren Evans: By a few years.
I’ve seen it all, Deputy Sheriff, Wayne County Sheriff, Detroit Police Chief.
I know more about safety than all of these D.C. attack groups combined.
They lie and they lie. Don’t believe them.
Abdul worked to keep Wayne County safe.
Supported our police and our sheriffs.
I trust Abdul to keep Michigan families safe.
I know public safety and I know Abdul.
Abdul: I’m Abdul El-Sayed and I approve this message because we all deserve to get home safe.
