Abdul El-Sayed Marks One Year on the Campaign Trail with Momentum and Growing Ground Game
MICHIGAN – On April 17, 2025 Abdul El-Sayed launched his bid for the open US Senate in Michigan. Now one year later, the campaign has seen growing momentum and massive support across the state. Just yesterday, a new Emerson poll showed Abdul with 24 percent support among Democratic primary voters, leading the Democratic primary field and gaining eight points in the last three months.
Abdul spent the last year visiting over 90 citiesfrom Escanaba and Three Rivers to Detroit and Grand Rapids with over 300 public events including striking with unions, joining more than 15 protests, organizing students across college campuses and most recently, energizing over 1,200 students in one day at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.
“The last year has been about bringing together folks around our shared goals to get money out of politics, put money back in Michiganders’ pockets, and pass Medicare for All,” said Abdul. “I’m so grateful for the surging support across the state. Together, we can build a Michigan that works for all of us. My career in public service has always been about fighting for our communities to have nice things, the things they need and deserve. That means standing up to corporate power, and fighting for guaranteed healthcare, affordable housing, good schools and an economy built for working people. I look forward to continuing to build this momentum alongside Michiganders who want a future they’ll be proud to hand to their kids.”
The campaign has over 4,500 volunteers from every corner of the state and across the country, hosting over 300 volunteer events since launch. Earlier this month, Abdul submitted nearly 30,000 signatures needed to secure his name on the ballot, all collected by the campaign’s incredible network of volunteers. The campaign has focused on empowering young Michiganders, running an innovative Student Fellowship program with 25 fellows organized on 10 campuses, including 3 community colleges. Abdul has received 142 endorsements including Senator Bernie Sanders, five U.S. House members, nine mayors, nine state legislators and 36 city council members across Michigan.
Abdul is the only candidate in the race who has never taken a dime of corporate money, and through an unmatched ground game and grassroots support, raised $7.7 million since launch one year ago, including 95% of donations under $200.
Over the last year, Abdul has rolled out policy on community engagement with Data Centers, on supporting small businesses, and launched the Fair Share Tax Agenda, to finally tax billionaire wealth to support things like fair pay for teachers, healthcare expansion, direct cash transfers, capping childcare costs, and eliminating medical debt.
Abdul’s campaign has not only met people across the state, on the ground, and in their communities but has made a strong presence online reaching young and new audiences. The campaign’s digital operation has garnered attention with viral moments, including a 12-patty burger challenge modeling billionaire greed, the first in the race TV ad during college football bowl games and collaborations with creators in Michigan and across the country, reaching new audiences every day. Abdul goes everywhere and talks to everyone, from taking tough interviews on FOX News to speaking about RFK Jr.’s destruction of American public health on MS Now.
With support growing across the state, the El-Sayed campaign will continue to take our message everywhere and to everyone, focused on showing Michiganders what we can have and should fight for.
