Working Families Party Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate
MICHIGAN – Today, the Working Families Party (WFP), a national progressive grassroots organization and political party of over 600,000 members across 18 active state chapters, endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for Michigan’s U.S. Senate race. Founded in 1998, the WFP is organizing a multiracial coalition of working people to advocate for progressive candidates in key races nationwide. Their slate of candidates has already begun sweeping races, with notable victories in Pennsylvania as their entire congressional slate won their respective primaries, including Abdul endorser Rep. Summer Lee (PA-12).
“As a working-class political party, we’re proud to support Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate,” said Maurice Mitchell, National Director of the Working Families Party. “Abdul has dedicated his career to making government work for regular people and fighting to improve our broken health care system. He’s not afraid to stand up to Donald Trump, Elon Musk, or any of the greedy billionaires screwing over our communities. We’re excited to work with Abdul to win Medicare for All, create good union jobs, and end the influence of big money in politics.”
This endorsement affirms Abdul’s commitment to the Working Families Guarantee, a policy platform that seeks to create a more affordable and dignified America for the working class. It includes a commitment to more affordable housing and healthcare, creating a national program to help workers find union jobs, guaranteed low-cost childcare, and 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave – achievable by taxing the ultra-wealthy and eliminating big money in our politics.
“The Working Families Party and our campaign are fundamentally built around the same political projects,” said Abdul. “Finding and keeping a good job, guaranteed healthcare, being able to afford a home, having the freedom to spend time with your family – the Working Families Party understands that these principles aren’t radical. They’re the baseline for a more equitable Michigan and America. Their endorsement shows that we’ve built a campaign centered around championing the working class, and I’m honored to receive it.”
The Working Families Party joins an expanding list of other state and national advocacy groups and unions, including IATSE Local 26, National Nurses United, The People’s Coalition, Our Revolution, The Michigan Democratic Party Grassroots, Progressive and LGBT&A Caucuses and over 150 other elected officials, community leaders, and organizations.
