NEW AD: “Chorus” Highlights Abdul’s Michigan Roots and Service, Spotlights Bernie Sanders and the Michiganders Powering His Campaign

MICHIGAN –  Today, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s campaign for Senate released its first major TV ad of the cycle: a 60 second spot titled “Chorus”. Featuring voices from communities across Michigan, the ad centers Abdul’s roots in the state and the three ideas driving his campaign: money out of politics, money in your pocket, and Medicare for All. The ad was produced by FIGHT Agency.

The spot opens with Abdul’s quintessentially Michigan story. Born and raised in Metro Detroit to parents who worked in the auto industry, Abdul captained his high school football team before attending the University of Michigan. He returned home after medical school to serve the community that raised him – rebuilding Detroit’s Health Department as its Director and later serving as the Wayne County Health Director, where he created programs that got tens of thousands of glasses for kids in need and cancelled millions in medical debt. Michigan LCV named Abdul “Michigan Public Official of the Year.”

In addition to Abdul’s day-one endorser Senator Bernie Sanders, the ad highlights Abdul’s recent UAW endorsement and a chorus of Michiganders including local leaders, the beneficiaries of the free glasses program, and medical debt relief recipients.

The spot is anchored by a series of sharp contrasts that distinguish Abdul from both of his primary opponents:

  • Abdul is the only candidate endorsed by Bernie Sanders.
  • Abdul is the only candidate endorsed by the UAW.
  • Abdul is the only candidate for Medicare for All.
  • Abdul is the only candidate for abolishing ICE.
  • Abdul is the only candidate who has never taken corporate PAC money.

Senator Sanders closes the ad by poking fun at Abdul’s name, joking to voters: “Don’t worry about his name!” Sanders, the nation’s most prominent Jewish-American politician, famously won Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary in 2016 and remains the most popular politician in the country.

This buy hits as Abdul’s momentum has become undeniable, with recent polling showing him leading by double digits ahead of the August primary. In a recent Mitchell Research/MIRS poll, Abdul leads his Democratic opponents by ten points. Young people have coalesced around Abdul – amongst voters 18-44, Abdul dominates the field, with 80% backing him in the same poll.
