ICYMI: Across Michigan, Thousands Rally for Abdul El-Sayed
MICHIGAN – This weekend, Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other special guests joined Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and more than 6,000 Michiganders for rallies in Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids.
At each stop, they underscored the stakes of the race and the tens of millions in dark money from AIPAC and other Super PACs flooding into Michigan in an attempt to buy our state’s next U.S. Senate seat. Together, they called on Michiganders to join Abdul in a different kind of politics – one where healthcare is guaranteed, corporate influence in politics is erased, and working people can afford to live dignified and meaningful lives.
In Detroit, they were joined by UAW President Shawn Fain, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and State Representative Donavan McKinney, who is running for Congress. In Lansing, they were joined by congressional candidate William Lawrence. And in Grand Rapids, they were joined by Commissioners Lisa Knight and Marshall Kilgore.

El-Sayed followed Sanders and took the stage to thunderous chants of “Abdul.” During his speech, he did a call and repeat with the crowd on his signature campaign pledge, promising, “Money out of politics. Money in your pocket. Medicare for All.”

With that, El-Sayed took the stage, enthusiastically greeting supporters as he made his way to the podium. The thundering applause that had already marked the evening became nearly deafening as he appeared.

Two of the most prominent progressive politicians in the country visited Grand Rapids on Sunday night, wrapping up a tour of the battleground state that sought to boost Abdul El-Sayed in his race for U.S. Senate.
Sanders described the Michigan Senate primary as a larger debate over political influence and the role of wealthy donors.
“This campaign is about whether we maintain the status quo, a status quo which is failing working families in Michigan and all over this country, or whether we stand up and fight for change,” Sanders said.
Building on the momentum from this weekend’s rallies, Senator Elizabeth Warren yesterday announced her endorsement of Abdul this morning, following her previous endorsement of former candidate and State Senator Mallory McMorrow. Warren’s endorsement further consolidates support behind Abdul’s campaign, uniting some of the country’s leading Democratic voices.
Senator Warren will be joining Abdul this weekend in Royal Oak and Flint for GOTV events to further energize supporters and drum up volunteer numbers ahead of the hotly-contested primary. You can watch her endorsement video here.
