ICYMI: Michigan American Federation of Teachers Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN – Earlier this month, the Michigan chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) announced their endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate. The Michigan AFT represents 35,000 educators and healthcare professionals working in schools, community colleges, universities, and hospitals across the state.

“Educators deserve an elected official who will fight for working families and not hold back on the policy wins that align with our values,” said Terrence Martin, Sr., President of AFT Michigan. “The labor movement stands with Abul because we know that he will do right by working families, focus on getting things done for Michigan, and ensure corporations pay their fair share. We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and elect Abdul El-Sayed as our next U.S. Senator.”

“Teachers are the best of us. And the AFT represents some of the most compassionate and hardest working people in our state,” said Abdul. “Yet, too often we take our educators for granted. Nobody should have to work a second job just to put food on the table, especially those who are helping to raise the next generation of Michiganders. I’ll always stand with the AFT, because stability for our teachers means a stronger education system, and a stronger education system means a better tomorrow. I’m deeply humbled to receive the AFT’s endorsement.”

The AFT joins a massive list of local, state and national unions backing Abdul, including the UAW, National Nurses United, AFA-CWA, UFCW Local 951, IATSE Local 26, UA Local 174, GEO Local 3550, and AFGE Local 2092. Abdul has been a member of AFT Local 477 and 6244, SEIU Local 500, the National Writers Union, and the AAUP. He is the only Democratic primary candidate in the race that has been a card-carrying union member. In January, Abdul released a Labor Policy Agenda, outlining his platform to protect union workers as Michigan’s next U.S. Senator.
