Michigan State Senator Stephanie Chang Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate
MICHIGAN – Today, Michigan State Senator Stephanie Change announced her endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate. As the first Asian American woman elected to the Michigan legislature, Sen. Chang has been an effective and principled lawmaker, drawing from her background as a community organizer in metro Detroit. She has advanced legislation on air, water and environmental protections, criminal justice reform, and immigrants’ rights issues. She has served as the State Senator from Michigan’s 3rd district, encompassing parts of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, since 2023.
“The many crises facing our state and country demand and deserve bold, determined fighters who know how to get things done,” said Sen. Chang. “I have known Abdul El-Sayed for over a decade. He will always put Michiganders first, above corporate interests. Abdul’s leadership will help Michiganders to not just weather the storm of unaffordable healthcare and energy and water bills, but come out of this storm thriving. He will fight to uphold the dignity and respect our beautiful immigrant and refugee communities deserve. I am proud to support Abdul’s campaign for the United States Senate because we need compassionate leaders who won’t back down from a tough challenge and will never waver on our values.”
“Stephanie Chang is a fierce leader who knows her community like the back of her hand,” said Abdul. “She is tapped into the needs of her constituents and shows up every day with their interests in mind – the exact kind of public service that this campaign is about uplifting. She has broken barriers and fought for the people of Michigan through her years of service, both in the legislature and outside of it. I am proud to have her support and look forward to working with her to deliver for everyday Michiganders.”
Sen. Chang is the first state senator to endorse Abdul in the primary race. She joins a long list of other Michigan legislators, including current and former State Representatives Alabas Farhat, Carrie Rheingans, Cynthia Neeley, Donavan McKinney, Dylan Wegela, Emily Dievendorf, Erin Byrnes, Jimmie Wilson, Kara Hope, Laurie Pohutsky, Leslie Love, Rachel Hood, and Tonya Myers Phillips. Beyond members of the Michigan Legislature, Abdul has earned support from over 200 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, Indivisible, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), and more.
