Representative Ayanna Pressley Endorses Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate

MICHIGAN –  Today, Representative Ayanna Pressley (MA-7) announced her endorsement of Dr. Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate. The first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress, Rep. Pressley has been fighting for Bay Staters her entire career. Before serving in the House, she was elected to the Boston City Council as an at-large member in 2009. In Congress, she has used her office to fight for the most vulnerable, introducing legislation to support low-wage workers, reform the criminal justice system, and protect survivors of sexual assault. Representing much of Boston and surrounding areas, Rep. Pressley has held her office since 2019.

“Michiganders deserve a Senator that is ready to meet the moment. That’s why I’m proud to endorse Abdul El-Sayed, a loving husband and father, and a card carrying union member,” said Rep. Pressley. “He has dedicated his life to serving Michigan communities. From his work with Detroit’s Health Department to his work for the Wayne County Department of Health Human & Veteran Services, he has shown his ability to lead from outside of elected office. Now that he is running for Senate he has proven that he will not waiver when it comes to ending genocide, he will work to end gerrymandering, and fight against environmental racism. Abdul will fight to abolish the filibuster, keep money out of politics, tackle the affordability crisis, and continue the work of making Medicare for All becoming realized. Michigan needs Abdul El-Sayed in the U.S Senate and so does the country.”

“Representative Ayanna Pressley is exactly what courageous leadership in Congress looks like,”said Abdul. “We both know that rejecting corporate PAC money is the only path towards a more equitable, just America. Rep. Pressley has led with these values first, rather than being beholden to billionaires or oligarchs, and that’s exactly why she has been an unabashed and relentless leader in the House. I’m deeply thankful for her support, and look forward to working with her in Congress.”

Rep. Pressley joins a long list of federal office holders backing Abdul. Abdul has received endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Ma.), Sen. Tina Smith (D-Mn.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Pramila Jayapal (WA-07), Summer Lee (PA-12), Delia Ramirez (IL-3), Analilia Mejia (NJ-11), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Ilhan Omar (MN-05), Lateefah Simon (CA-12), Adelita Grijalva (AZ-07), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, the Hon. David Bonior and the Hon. Andy Levin. Beyond members of Congress, Abdul has earned support from over 200 elected officials, advocacy groups, and labor unions, including the UAW, Indivisible, the Working Families Party, National Nurses United, and more.
