ICYMI: Former Congressman Sandy Levin Issues Statement Encouraging Michiganders to Support Abdul

MICHIGAN – Yesterday, the Hon. Sandy Levin released the following statement in support of Abdul’s campaign for US Senate. Former Rep. Levin served Macomb and Oakland in the U.S. House of Representatives for 36 years and is one of Michigan’s most respected public servants: 

The administration of Donald Trump represents an existential threat to our democracy. I have worked with many Republicans on many issues. But the MAGA movement has gone outside the realm of democracy and is lurching towards authoritarianism by restricting free speech, the rights of minorities, our very ability to vote and more. The terrible anti-Muslim bigotry of the campaign against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed is emblematic of their approach.

I have some significant disagreement with Abdul in his approach to the conflict involving Israel and the Palestinians. I have been a strong proponent of a two-state solution to that crisis and he has not supported this approach. Yet, as I reflect, I must say that I have had disagreements with many colleagues in the House and Senate over the decades, but I have never failed to support the full Democratic ticket.

We need office holders who will support strong action on climate change, a new era of trade where workers’ rights and the environment come first, expanded and affordable health care, housing, child care, education, food and other basic necessities of life; who will center the freedom to form unions, living wages, real retirement benefits, health and safety; who will stand up and fight to advance the great American experiment in a democracy where all feel welcome, heard and included.

That is what I have devoted my life to. And I am confident Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will be a strong advocate for these goals.
