ICYMI: Michigan Farmers Are All-In For Abdul El-Sayed
Michigan Farmers Union President Bob Thompson: “Our farms, and every family that depends on them for food, need a senator who will fight for a fair farm bill. That’s why the Michigan Farmers Union is backing Abdul El-Sayed – and I hope you’ll join us.”
MICHIGAN – A new op-ed by the president of the Michigan Farmers Union, Bob Thompson, highlights the broad coalition of Michigan farmers backing Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s bid for Senate.
As costs sky-rocket because of Trump’s dangerous Iran war and reckless trade war, Michigan family farmers are struggling to scrape by. While Mike Rogers cozies up to the billionaires and agricultural monopolies putting Michigan farmers out of business, Abdul is the only candidate in this race committed to prioritizing the needs of farmers.
Abdul’s new Farmers Over Billionaires platform lays out the legislation he will champion on day one to deliver better opportunities and lower costs for Michigan farmers.

USA Today Network: Why Michigan farmers need a better farm bill
- The Michigan Farmers Union is proud to endorse [Dr. Abdul El-Sayed].
- So much has changed during Trump’s second term. Tariffs, rising fuel costs, and canceled USDA contracts have been almost too much to bear. Costs on my own operation are through the roof this year. For a sixth-generation farmer like me, it’s as tough as it’s ever been, and as president of the Michigan Farmers Union, I hear the same from members across the state who are struggling to pay their bills.
- We need fair markets and stronger competition in the farm bill, and that’s exactly what El-Sayed is fighting for. He has called for putting family farms ahead of corporate agriculture and taking on the consolidated seed, fertilizer and chemical companies that price-gouge farmers for the inputs we depend on in his new “Farmers Over Billionaires” policy agenda.
- Everyone relies on farmers to eat, and if the system is unfair for us, everyone loses.
- Right now, four multinational corporations (Tyson, Cargill, JBS, and National Beef) control more than 80 percent of U.S. beef processing. El-Sayed supports solutions to deal with this crisis like the Meat and Poultry Special Investigator Act.
- Unlike some leaders in Washington, El-Sayed actually has experience as a public health official who will make America healthy. He also won’t be afraid to stand up to Big Ag corporations that are driving up grocery prices and hurting family farmers’ ability to make a living.
- Standing in Gratiot County, I saw a candidate ready to carry on the work Senator Stabenow did for Michigan agriculture. Our farms, and every family that depends on them for food, need a senator who will fight for a fair farm bill. That’s why the Michigan Farmers Union is backing Abdul El-Sayed – and I hope you’ll join us.
